Area Formula for Rectangles

Area Formula for Rectangles

When we want to find out how much space is inside a flat shape, we measure its area. Instead of counting little squares one by one, we can use a simple math formula to find the area of rectangles and squares quickly!

The Formula for Rectangles

To find the area of a rectangle, you just need to know two measurements: the length (how long it is) and the width (how wide it is).

The formula is: Area=length×widthArea = length \times width

Example: Find the area of a rectangle with a length of 7 cm7\text{ cm} and a width of 4 cm4\text{ cm}.

  • Area=7×4Area = 7 \times 4
  • Area=28Area = 28

Because we are measuring area in centimeters, our answer is written in square centimeters (cm2\text{cm}^2). So, the area is 28 cm228\text{ cm}^2.

The Formula for Squares

A square is just a special rectangle where all four sides are the exact same length. To find the area of a square, you multiply the side length by itself.

The formula is: Area=side×sideArea = side \times side

Example: A square has sides of 5 m5\text{ m}. What is its area?

  • Area=5×5Area = 5 \times 5
  • Area=25Area = 25

The area of the square is 25 square meters25\text{ square meters} (m2\text{m}^2).

Quick Tip: Don't Forget the Units!

Whenever you calculate area, your answer should always be in "square" units. If the sides are measured in centimeters, the area is in square centimeters. If the sides are in meters, the area is in square meters!
