Equal Parts and Naming Fractions

Equal Parts and Naming Fractions

When we share something, like a pizza or a chocolate bar, we want to make sure everyone gets a fair share. In math, a fraction describes a part of a whole. To be a true fraction, the whole must be divided into equal parts.

What are Equal Parts?

Equal parts mean that every piece is exactly the same size. If you cut a square into pieces that are different sizes, those are not equal parts, and we cannot use our fraction words for them.

Naming the Fractions

When we divide shapes into equal parts, we use special words to name them:

  • Halves: When a shape is divided into 22 equal parts, each part is called a half. One piece is written as 12\frac{1}{2}.
  • Thirds: When a shape is divided into 33 equal parts, each part is called a third. One piece is written as 13\frac{1}{3}.
  • Fourths (or Quarters): When a shape is divided into 44 equal parts, each part is called a fourth or a quarter. One piece is written as 14\frac{1}{4}.

How to Name Shaded Parts

If you look at a shape, you can tell what fraction is shaded by counting!

  1. Count the total equal parts: This tells you the name of the fraction (halves, thirds, or fourths).
  2. Count the shaded parts: This tells you how many of those parts you have.

Example: Imagine a circle cut into 44 equal slices. If 11 slice is colored in, what fraction is shaded?

  • There are 44 equal parts, so we are working with fourths.
  • 11 part is shaded.
  • The shaded fraction is one-fourth (or 14\frac{1}{4}).

Remember, the secret to fractions is always making sure the parts are perfectly equal!
