Understanding Subtraction
Understanding Subtraction
Subtraction is all about taking away. When you subtract, you start with a group of things, take some away, and count how many are left. It can also mean finding the difference between two groups.
The Minus Sign (−)
In math, we use special symbols to show what we are doing. For subtraction, we use the minus sign (−).
When you see a math problem like this: 5−2=3
You read it as: "Five minus two equals three." This means if you have 5 things and you take away 2 of them, you have 3 things left over.
Taking Away
Let's look at a real-life example! Imagine there are 5 birds sitting on a fence. Suddenly, 2 birds fly away. How many birds are still on the fence?
To find out, we write a subtraction sentence: 5−2=3
There are 3 birds left on the fence!
Finding the Difference
Subtraction also helps us find the difference between two numbers. Imagine you have 4 toy cars, and your friend has 1 toy car. How many more cars do you have?
We can subtract to find the answer: 4−1=3
You have 3 more cars than your friend.
The Opposite of Addition
Did you know subtraction is just the opposite of addition?
- Addition is putting things together: 3+2=5
- Subtraction is taking things apart: 5−2=3
If you know how to add numbers together, you can use that knowledge to help you subtract!
