Estimating Products and Quotients

Estimating Products and Quotients

Sometimes in math, you don't need an exact answer. Other times, you want to double-check your exact answer to make sure you didn't make a big mistake. This is where estimation comes in!

By using rounding and compatible numbers, you can quickly estimate the results of multiplication (products) and division (quotients).

Estimating Products

To estimate a product, round each factor to its highest place value (its leading digit). Then, multiply the rounded numbers together.

Example 1: Estimate 38ร—4238 \times 42

  1. Round 3838 to the nearest ten: 4040
  2. Round 4242 to the nearest ten: 4040
  3. Multiply the rounded numbers: 40ร—40=1,60040 \times 40 = 1{,}600

So, 38ร—42โ‰ˆ1,60038 \times 42 \approx 1{,}600.

Example 2: Checking for Reasonableness

Is the answer to 324ร—6=1,844324 \times 6 = 1{,}844 reasonable? Let's estimate to find out:

  1. Round 324324 to the nearest hundred: 300300
  2. Multiply by 66: 300ร—6=1,800300 \times 6 = 1{,}800

Because 1,8441{,}844 is very close to our estimate of 1,8001{,}800, the answer is reasonable. (The exact answer is actually 1,9441{,}944, but our estimate quickly tells us we are in the right ballpark and didn't accidentally get something like 18,00018{,}000!)

Estimating Quotients

When estimating division, rounding to the nearest ten or hundred doesn't always make the math easy. Instead, we use compatible numbersโ€”numbers that are close to the original numbers but divide evenly in your head.

Example 3: Estimate 4,321รท74{,}321 \div 7

  1. Look at the divisor (77) and the first two digits of the dividend (4343).
  2. Think of a multiple of 77 that is very close to 4343. We know that 7ร—6=427 \times 6 = 42.
  3. Change 4,3214{,}321 to a compatible number: 4,2004{,}200.
  4. Divide mentally: 4,200รท7=6004{,}200 \div 7 = 600

So, 4,321รท7โ‰ˆ6004{,}321 \div 7 \approx 600.

Summary

  • For multiplication: Round factors to their leading digit.
  • For division: Find a compatible number that easily divides by the divisor.
  • Always ask: "Does my exact answer make sense compared to my estimate?"
