Two-Digit Addition Without Regrouping
Two-Digit Addition Without Regrouping
Adding two-digit numbers is easy when you take it one step at a time! "Without regrouping" means that when we add the numbers in each column, the answer is always 9 or less. We don't need to carry any extra numbers over to the next column.
How to Add Two-Digit Numbers
When adding two-digit numbers, follow these three simple steps:
- Line them up: Write the numbers on top of each other so the tens and ones line up perfectly.
- Add the Ones: Always start on the right side with the ones column.
- Add the Tens: Move to the left and add the tens column.
Let's Look at an Example
Let's solve 23+45.
First, stack the numbers:
23+45โโStep 1: Add the Ones column (the right side) 3+5=8 Write the 8 in the ones place.
Step 2: Add the Tens column (the left side) 2+4=6 Write the 6 in the tens place.
Put it all together:
23+4568โโSo, 23+45=68.
More Practice
Let's try 31+56:
- Add the ones: 1+6=7
- Add the tens: 3+5=8
- The answer is 87.
Let's try 42+34:
- Add the ones: 2+4=6
- Add the tens: 4+3=7
- The answer is 76.
Important Tip: Always remember to add the ones column first! Even though we don't need to carry numbers in these problems, starting with the ones builds a great habit for when you learn to regroup later.
