Understanding Subtraction

Subtraction is all about taking away. When you subtract, you start with a group of things, take some away, and count how many are left. It can also mean finding the difference between two groups.

The Minus Sign (−-)

In math, we use special symbols to show what we are doing. For subtraction, we use the minus sign (−-).

When you see a math problem like this: 5−2=35 - 2 = 3

You read it as: "Five minus two equals three." This means if you have 55 things and you take away 22 of them, you have 33 things left over.

Taking Away

Let's look at a real-life example! Imagine there are 55 birds sitting on a fence. Suddenly, 22 birds fly away. How many birds are still on the fence?

To find out, we write a subtraction sentence: 5−2=35 - 2 = 3

There are 33 birds left on the fence!

Finding the Difference

Subtraction also helps us find the difference between two numbers. Imagine you have 44 toy cars, and your friend has 11 toy car. How many more cars do you have?

We can subtract to find the answer: 4−1=34 - 1 = 3

You have 33 more cars than your friend.

The Opposite of Addition

Did you know subtraction is just the opposite of addition?

  • Addition is putting things together: 3+2=53 + 2 = 5
  • Subtraction is taking things apart: 5−2=35 - 2 = 3

If you know how to add numbers together, you can use that knowledge to help you subtract!
