Two-Digit Addition Without Regrouping

Two-Digit Addition Without Regrouping

Adding two-digit numbers is easy when you take it one step at a time! "Without regrouping" means that when we add the numbers in each column, the answer is always 9 or less. We don't need to carry any extra numbers over to the next column.

How to Add Two-Digit Numbers

When adding two-digit numbers, follow these three simple steps:

  1. Line them up: Write the numbers on top of each other so the tens and ones line up perfectly.
  2. Add the Ones: Always start on the right side with the ones column.
  3. Add the Tens: Move to the left and add the tens column.

Let's Look at an Example

Let's solve 23+4523 + 45.

First, stack the numbers:

23+45\begin{array}{r} 23 \\ + 45 \\ \hline \end{array}

Step 1: Add the Ones column (the right side) 3+5=83 + 5 = 8 Write the 88 in the ones place.

Step 2: Add the Tens column (the left side) 2+4=62 + 4 = 6 Write the 66 in the tens place.

Put it all together:

23+4568\begin{array}{r} 23 \\ + 45 \\ \hline 68 \end{array}

So, 23+45=6823 + 45 = 68.

More Practice

Let's try 31+5631 + 56:

  • Add the ones: 1+6=71 + 6 = 7
  • Add the tens: 3+5=83 + 5 = 8
  • The answer is 8787.

Let's try 42+3442 + 34:

  • Add the ones: 2+4=62 + 4 = 6
  • Add the tens: 4+3=74 + 3 = 7
  • The answer is 7676.

Important Tip: Always remember to add the ones column first! Even though we don't need to carry numbers in these problems, starting with the ones builds a great habit for when you learn to regroup later.
