Two-Digit Subtraction Without Regrouping
Two-Digit Subtraction Without Regrouping
Subtracting two-digit numbers is easy when you take it one step at a time! "Without regrouping" means you don't have to borrow any numbers because the top digit is always larger than or equal to the bottom digit.
The Golden Rule of Subtraction
Always line up your numbers vertically, and always start with the ones column!
Here are the simple steps:
- Line up the numbers: Put the tens over the tens and the ones over the ones.
- Subtract the ones: Look at the numbers on the far right. Subtract the bottom number from the top number.
- Subtract the tens: Move to the left column. Subtract the bottom number from the top number.
Example 1: 67−23
Step 1: Subtract the ones (right side) Look at the ones digits: 7 and 3. 7−3=4 Write the 4 in the ones place of your answer.
Step 2: Subtract the tens (left side) Look at the tens digits: 6 and 2. 6−2=4 Write the 4 in the tens place of your answer.
Put them together, and you get your answer: 67−23=44.
Example 2: 89−45
Let's try another one by breaking it down into columns.
Step 1: Ones column 9−5=4
Step 2: Tens column 8−4=4
Put them together, and the answer is 44.
Example 3: 76−32
Apply the same steps:
- Ones: 6−2=4
- Tens: 7−3=4
The answer is 44!
Tip: Just remember to stack your numbers neatly, always start on the right side with the ones, and take it one column at a time.
