Sorting & Categorizing Objects
Sorting and Categorizing Objects
What Does it Mean to Sort?
Sorting means looking at a mixed-up group of items and organizing them. When we categorize objects, we put things that share something in common into the same group.
Ways to Sort Objects
We can sort objects by looking for a shared rule or feature. Here are the three most common ways to sort:
- By Color: Putting all the red things together, all the blue things together, and all the yellow things together.
- By Shape: Putting all the circles in one pile, all the squares in another pile, and all the triangles in a third pile.
- By Size: Grouping items into "big" and "small" piles.
Counting Our Groups
Once our objects are sorted into neat categories, we can count how many are in each group to learn more about our data. Counting helps us answer questions like:
- How many items are in a specific group?
- Which group has the most?
- Which group has the least?
Let's Practice!
Imagine you have a box of shape blocks: 3 red circles, 2 blue circles, and 4 red triangles.
Example 1: Sort the shapes by color. How many red shapes are there?
- To find the red shapes, we group the 3 red circles and the 4 red triangles together.
- 3+4=7
- There are 7 red shapes.
Example 2: Sort the shapes by shape. How many circles are there?
- To find the circles, we group the 3 red circles and the 2 blue circles together.
- 3+2=5
- There are 5 circles.
Example 3: Which color group has the most shapes?
- We know there are 7 red shapes.
- There are only 2 blue shapes.
- Because 7 is greater than 2 (7>2), the red group has the most shapes!
