Comparing Weight and Capacity
Comparing Weight and Capacity
In math, we can look at two objects and figure out which one is heavier or which one can hold more inside. We call this comparing weight and capacity.
Comparing Weight: Heavier and Lighter
Weight tells us how heavy or light an object is. When we compare the weight of two things, we use the words heavier and lighter.
- Heavier: The object that weighs more.
- Lighter: The object that weighs less.
Imagine holding a real book in one hand and a pencil in the other. Your hand holding the book is pulled down more because the book is heavier. The pencil is lighter.
We can also put objects in order. If we have a feather, an apple, and a big dog, we can order them from lightest to heaviest: 1. Feather (Lightest) 2. Apple 3. Dog (Heaviest)
Comparing Capacity: Holds More and Holds Less
Capacity tells us how much a container can hold inside it. Think about pouring water into a cup. When we compare containers, we use the words holds more and holds less.
- Holds More: A container that can fit more inside.
- Holds Less: A container that fits less inside.
If you have a big soup bowl and a small drinking cup, the soup bowl holds more water. The drinking cup holds less.
How to Test It Yourself
You don't need a number scale or a measuring cup to compare! You can use direct comparison:
- For Weight: Put one object in your left hand and one in your right hand. The one that pushes down harder is heavier!
- For Capacity: Fill a small cup with water. Pour that water into a big bowl. Notice how the bowl is not full? That proves the big bowl holds more than the small cup!
